Jim Weaver Barnes, of Choctaw-Welsh ancestry, was born in Summerfield, Oklahoma, in 1933. After high school, he attended Southeastern Oklahoma State University (BA, 1964) and the University of Arkansas (MA, 1965, PhD, 1970). His teaching career consisted of posts as professor of Comparative Literature at Truman State University, 1970-2003, and professor of English at Brigham Young University, 2003-2006. Plans for the David O. McKay building began in 1952 after an evaluation by the Brigham Young University College of Education concluded that the existing building for the College of Education were no longer meeting the growing needs of the program.
